They only grow to a total length ranging from 36 to 45 centimeters (14 to 18 in), and weigh anything from 175 to 400 grams (6.2 to 14 oz). Now compare that to the 7 ft (2 m), 90 lb (40 kg), Giant Anteater.</p> <p>Staying true to their name, they eat between 700 and 5,000 ants everyday. They can also sometimes eat termites and tiny beetles. Due to an astounding lack of Fiber One bars in the tropical forests of Central and South America, the Silky Anteater’s metabolism can only manage one poop a day.</p> <p>They only have 1 baby at a time, up to twice a year (THE BABIES COME OUT FURRY). With the exceptions of raising young and mating, the Silky Anteater is a lone wolf so-to-speak, living in solitude. They raise their babies in nests in tree holes, rather than carrying them on their back like other Anteaters.</p> <p>They will often hide in Silk Cotton Trees during the day as it’s great camouflage which thereby protects them from turning into a Harpy Eagle’s lunch. One of the salamanders (<em>B. leandrae</em>) has been named after an 11-year old girl who became friends with the team whilst they conducted their fieldwork. “Leandra grew fascinated by the world of amphibians,” explains team leader Aldemar Acevedo. “She was eager to learn about our work and became an excellent spokesperson for nature conservation among the community.”</p> <p><em>Bolitoglossa leandrae</em> is a relatively small salamander (its body measures roughly 2.5 cm in length, about the size of a 50 pence, 20 cent or US quarter coin) with a narrow head and long, slender tail. Males are dark brown with thin yellow stripes along the length of the body and females are reddish brown.</p> <p><em>Bolitoglossa tamaense </em>is slightly longer than <em>B. leandrae</em> (the body of the longest specimen measured approximately 5 cm, or the same as the height of a credit card) and has a broad head and relatively long body and legs.
